Where to Shop and What to Buy in Ubud

Shopping in and around the perimeters of the Ubud village promises an exciting adventure that will add to a memorable holiday experience. The whole area is dotted with different shops and galleries suitable for a free-roaming spree. Quieter, interconnecting footpaths and roads compared to the island's southern region, makes for an enjoyable shopping tour.

As a centre of artisan communities, handicrafts from every corner of Ubud's neighbouring villages can be found here. From Ubud's centre, roam through the main street of Jalan Raya Ubud and down to the rows of shops along Jalan Monkey Forest. Or venture further north to the neighbouring Tegallalang or the silver and goldsmiths' neighbourhood of Mas, Celuk and Sukawati.

Buddhas & Silk

Buddhas & Silk opened in 2001, and has brought together figurines, spiritual imagery, exotic woven and dyed textiles, furniture and curios from the island and other parts of Asia under one roof. 

Entering into the shop, an area is visibly dedicated to Buddha fugures, and in the middle you will find the wide array of textiles from all over the archipelago. A selection of photography is also displayed. 

Another section offers homeware selections, including recycled wood furniture and antique items. Also found here are quilts, pillow cases, ceramics, Javanese painted glass and jewelry.

Delta Dewata Ubud

Delta Dewata is located north of the Ubud main centre and art market, and offers a wide variety of goods, in the supermarket itself, as well as by other various tenants onsite.

Silver items and souvenirs can be found at the entrance area while further inside fruits and vegetables and other daily necesseties can be found.

This supermarket can be considered the main shopping venue of the local chain, while the convenience store, Delta Mart, can be found along the Jalan Monkey Forest street, showcasing select items.

This small family run bookstore was started in 1986 by a well-known local writer and musician and his wife. Since its opening, Ganesha Bookshop has been flocked by literary lovers, rare book collectors, and researchers alike. 

What first started off with a personal book collection had expanded over time and now the store boasts a vast collection of new, used and antique books mainly on subjects of Bali and Indonesia, as well as a collection of Indonesian and Balinese ethnic music CDs and DVDs. Horizon Glassworks

Californian hot glass artist, Ron Seivertson, through his venture, Horizon Glassworks, designs and produces a wide variety of vases, rondels, bowls, light fixtures, paperweights, sinks, abstract forms and more.

Completed works are available in the gallery but can also be created one-off or in limited series production. The high quality hand-blown and sculpted glass in-the-making can be witnessed at the adjacent workshop where the artist and his team are usually busy at work.

Lamps, bottles, glasses, plates, vases, sinks, rondels are some among his creations that adorn the gallery, which are also available for retail, wholesale and made-to-order.

Mas 'Wood Carvings Village'

Some five kilometres south of central Ubud lies the woodcarving centre of Mas, a village of high caste Brahmin families that has become a genuine example on how reflections of serene countryside life inspire earnest wood-crafters to captivate them in impeccably beautiful statuettes.

Typically, Mas carvings are smooth, unpainted, and made of high-quality wood, but carvers also shape gnarly driftwood and tree roots into lizards, turtles, tortoises, abstract faces and fish heads.

The carvers sculpt everything in Mas – weeping Buddhas, Vishnu, Garuda, Sri (the Rice Goddess), heroes, fruit trees, key rings, chess pieces, prancing horses and many other animal figures. Many excellent woodcarving shops line the main road. Each shop amiably welcomes tourists to drop in and see the carvers at work.

It’s not always necessary to bring cash because some shops accept credit cards for your transaction but remember to always bargain for the best price.

Murni's Shop in Ubud

The Owl House features the works of Balinese painter Wayan Sila. His internationally exhibited works channel his heart and soul to the world through the magical portraits of owls.

Pakudui, 'Garuda Village'

The craftsman’s dominion of the Pakudui Village in Tegallalang is a drive up north from Ubud's centre. Entering Pakudui one will see wooden blocks, logs, shavings, and the magnificent art forms made from these materials lined up along the small and winding road.

Here one will find extraordinary varieties of ornamental woodwork and omni-scale carvings. The villagers here are avid Balinese craftsmen with skills incomparable to any world-recognized artist. Different forms of sculptures and effigies, either handed down through generations or spurred as a result of an ever-growing creative process using the most natural of all media – wood.

But in Pakudui you will eventually notice the recurring presence of one particular mythical and significantly Balinese figure. The mythical Garuda. Amongst the carved mythical lions, horses, human figures, dogs, dragons, vases, frogs, kangaroos, cats, ornate totems, panels, doors, windows, tables and the many brilliant forms of creativity extending even to large-scale dinosaurs, the Garuda seems to be majestically ever-present in various shapes and sizes. The smaller ones are fit four souvenirs, while the bigger ones best for shipment. Bargain straight from the carvers and get lucky.

Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women

Established in 1991, the Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women showcases and sells various art works created by more than 70 female artists who hail from Bali, Java, Kalimantan as well as from overseas, who all reside on the island.

The Pure Land Gallery

Ticket to the Moon

Ticket To The Moon was started in Bali over a decade ago and specialises in durable parachute hammocks incorporating silk nylon materials. Located beside Ary's Warung in Ubud, and in fact having the same owner, Toko East showcases a variety of designs drawn from deep inspiration of the ancient Majaphit kingdom.

Among the collections include bronze works, hand-blown glass items, handmade ceramics, garden lamps, silver-clad wooden ornaments, and leather office and home accessories.

Treasures

Just from its name, you will easily know what it offers. Treasures boasts a collection of fine gold designs, each a magnum opus produced through the collaboration of Balinese master goldsmiths and international designers.

Ubud Organic Market

The Ubud Organic Market was concieved through a joint venture of small businesses in the area, first held in 2006 on a Saturday morning, at the front of Pizza Bagus restaurant in Pengosekan.

The market is an answer to how difficult it was for customers to access reasonably priced organic produce, and the concern that independent growers had trouble reaching their targeted markets. Thus, the organic market also acted as a forum.

Sellers of organic vegetable and fruit produce, jams, soy milks, healthy drinks and snacks, packaged flours, staple items, organic and artisan breads, seedlings, health-promoting plants and tinctures, soap nuts, household cleaning items and beauty products all gather to show their ware.
