Blanco Renaissance Museum is a notable landmark in the artisan village that is Ubud. The palatial residence and gallery building perched on a hill overlooking the Campuhan River is an epitome of the late maestro, Don Antonio Blanco.
Antonio Blanco is one among the few Bali art maestros whose love, life and lust, according to him, are blended in his artworks. His collections of paintings, well-preserved at the Blanco Renaissance Museum, essentially in his former studios, keep attracting visitors and art lovers in particular.
It was Antonio Blanco's lifelong vision to turn his splendid studios into a museum, which he had worked upon into his late years, yet dramatically passed away just before its inauguration before the turn of the millennium. His son, Mario, follows on in his footsteps as an endowed painter. The Blanco Renaissance Museum opened to the public, showcasing both the maestro's and Mario's artworks in impressive open-house style studio settings.

A stopover at the Blanco Renaissance Museum is a visit to a man’s artistic realm of passion and love. The museum is usually an included itinerary on visits to the Ubud area, easily located at the western end of the main Ubud Road bordering the Campuhan River. A sharp left turn up a climbing path is hard to miss, which leads right to the museum’s entrance gates.
The splendid building is a unique intermingling of Balinese architectural features instilled with hints of Antonio Blanco’s Catalan heritage. A vast collection of Blanco’s artworks which were created from different periods of his long career are featured throughout the elaborate and subtly-lit walls, and in the painting workshops.
During his life his grand residence was a frequent daily break-in-the-journey to hundreds of people from around the world, who came in to view his works. The artist eventually earned his title "The Fabulous Blanco," which mirrored his talent for creativity.
Antonio Blanco’s life story has been an inspiring one to so many generations from various walks of life, beyond the artist community. His love story with his muse, Balinese dancer-wife, Ni Ronji (according to the artist, was the sole model for his paintings) had even inspired a film and a national TV series.
Prior to his arrival on Bali in 1952, he was traveling away from his home in Catalonia in Spain, pursuing his passion for a career in art in various cities of Europe and the United States, where instead he found his way onto catwalk and modeling.
Frustrated, he decided to travel to the East. Bali was his sole destination. But it was not until he met his sole model, muse and future wife, that he was able to transform all his energy into what many people came to admire. Visiting Blanco Renaissance Museum is a visit to a man’s artistic realm of passion and love.
There are several Blanco Litographs and books about Antonio Blanco available for purchase at the museum. The Blanco family provides personal tours of the museum and grounds. While visiting, the museum encourages visitors to take a stroll outside to the surrounding areas of the main building.
The Blanco Renaissance Museum features a range of facilities to aid your journey into the arts. A studio where Master Blanco used to paint as well as the gallery exhibiting Mario's works can be found inside.
The museum also features a gift shop, café and the Blanco’s family temple. The museum’s café features a cozy Balinese atmosphere and serves a range of European and Asian menus and snacks. The contiguous tropical gardens throughout its grounds are lush and enjoyable to spend even a full day visit at the museum.
