    Best Places to Go at Night in Denpasar

    Nightlife in Denpasar offers a select number of worthwhile places to visit, including two major traditional markets and a handful of bars and lively restaurants that stay open late across this popular southern Bali region.

    Denpasar nightclubs are of a minimum selection, and one of the longstanding hangouts is the Akasaka located on one of the corners of the Simpang Enam roundabout on Jalan Teuku Umar. Two separate great bar, pub and restaurant scenes with regular live music entertainment are just 30 minutes east from the hub of Denpasar. Here are some of the best places to go at night in Denpasar to enjoy nightlife in Bali’s capital city.

    Kereneng & Asoka Night Market
    Kereneng & Asoka Night Market

    Kereneng Night Market, otherwise known locally as ‘Pasar Kereneng’, is often regarded as being part of the adjacent Asoka Market, and is where you can find Denpasar city’s thriving night market scene with countless food hawkers and meals-on-wheels offering all sorts local Indonesian cuisine, from chicken noodles to bakso and satays. Some vendors also sell batik cloths, traditional kitchen utensils, farming tools and fresh goods around the clock. The night market usually starts around 16:00, when the roadside food stalls wheel in and set up their tarp shelters and benches. You can find the Balinese favourite babi guling roast pork, alongside various ‘halal’ Muslim-Javanese cuisine. Traditional cakes, snacks and desserts are also available in a wide variety.

    As one of the longstanding pubs in the Denpasar-Sanur locale, Arena Pub & Restaurant offers a great night out with its friendly pub atmosphere and well-stocked bar, which also presents delicious prime cuts and grills. The bar also features a reasonably priced wine collection, as well as a great line-up of international beers. Lovers of steaks, burgers and pork ribs will instantly find their favourite here. Your dinners are paired with fun and live entertainment, especially during Friday nights when local bands take to the stage from 22:00 onwards. Pool tables are ready for anyone up for some competition, while big screens show live international sport feeds from boxing, cricket, rugby, NFL to Formula 1 and MotoGP series.

    For a modern clubbing scene right in urban Denpasar, head down to the Simpan Enam roundabout on Jalan Teuku Umar, only several minutes south from the main town hub. Akasaka Bali, also known simply as A-Club, is Denpasar’s answer to a one-stop nightlife spot, complete with a restaurant, music club and karaoke. The long running venue has catered to locals and visitors since 1989, and together with the monument and roundabout has become one of Denpasar’s unofficial landmarks. Karaoke VIP rooms are available, where you and your friends can put your vocals to the test. The music club also features regular DJ gigs, sexy dancers and fashion shows, and has special three-monthly highlights with national celebrity bands taking to the stage. Ladies’ nights are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, when entry is free and loads of discounts are on offer, such as 50% on draft beer.

    Sector Bar & Restaurant

    Sector Bar at Bali Beach Golf Course is located right next to the greens and offers great views by day, and takes on a sophisticated bar scene by night. The bar stocks a good selection of gourmet and rare wines, and features a local band performing live jazz nightly. There’s also Latin and salsa nights Monday through midweek, and live solo performances every Friday from 18:00 onwards. The trendy lounge bar has an urban club atmosphere, and some nights also feature resident DJs spinning dance tunes late into the wee hours. The crowd is a good mix of locals, expatriates and visitors.

    Badung and Kumbasari Night Market
    Badung and Kumbasari Night Market

    Badung Market is Bali’s largest traditional market, located right on the western side of the Badung River. The Kumbasari Art Market is on the other side of the river, and both are connected by a small bridge, forming one of the largest shopping epicentres of Denpasar, mostly offering goods and daily necessities sourced by local residents at prices deemed the cheapest on the whole island. The market never sleeps, with stalls offering a continuous flow of fresh goods from farmers and fishermen from all over the island, from fresh fruits, meat and poultry and groceries, while Kumbasari houses slow-moving items, from fashion items and fabrics, handicrafts and souvenirs. Badung Market’s open-air grounds, right next to a large parking space, takes on its night market scene from 18:00 when vendors set up tents and offer traditional snacks and local cuisine.
