Bali Surfing

Surfing in Kuta Beach, Bukit Peninsula and Sanur

The story goes that Kuta's rolling waves were discovered by the first surfers in the 1930's. They've been drawing those in search of sun, sea and long rides through glassy tubes ever since. Bali's coastline provides ideal surf. Reef breaks, lagoons and varying conditions create great waves for both veteran surfers and newbies.

Experienced surfers can head to the outer reef breaks, while newbies can opt for a gentler ride in the lagoons. Bali is a perfect place to learn this exhilarating sport with boards for rent at the main surfing beaches and lessons available. Many local shops in Kuta cater to surfers, so if you've forgotten wax, rashguards, etc., it's not a problem.

Surfing in Bali

Surfing around the Bukit Peninsula

Located in south-west Bali ... This is where the world famous surf waves are to be found. Uluwatu, Impossibles, Bingin - poetically named waves that break on shallow reefs creating those lovely long long tubes...

The favorite surf spots around the Bukit Peninsula include Balangan, Dreamland, Bingin, Impossibles, Padang Padang, Uluwatu in the peninsula's west, Nyang Nyang on the southwest, Green Ball on the island's most southern point, and Nusa Dua and the uniquely named Sri Lanka surf spot on the Bukit's east.

Surfing at Kuta Beach

Kuta is Bali's premier surfing beach. Beginner or expert, Kuta caters to all. Lessons are available for beginners provided by the many surf schools and classes that have sprung up in the recent years, plus board rentals if you need the basic equipment but didn't bring your own. The locals and regular surfers will tell you the best places.

Need a ride out to the outer reefs? No problem, as boats are available for hire in Tuban. Or you may opt for more mellow beach breaks in front of the Hard Rock hotel.  The more serious pack of surfers now head for the challenging surf spots scattered around the Bukit Peninsula.

Surfing in Sanur

Surfers head to Sanur, mainly targeting two of its favored spots, namely the Sanur Reef and the Tandjung Reef. November to April produces perfect right handers which can result in lovely long,  hollow waves at high tides. Turtle Island or Pulau Serangan as referred to by the locals, has a good reef break but can get a bit crowded if there's a big swell.

The swells usually are from the south with four to six-foot waves. Fun swells can be had at the Sanur rights especially during high tide. Serious swells do the trick here and always be aware of the reef.

Kite Surfing

Kite Surfing in Bali

Kitesurfing, or kiteboarding, is an extreme water sport. The best time to get out and ride the foam and execute aerials is from May until October during the dry season when the windspeeds are around 12-15 knots.

Prime spots for kitesurfing are in Canggu for the advanced, while other spots such as around the Sanur lagoon can be enjoyed by complete beginners. Local shops can provide equipment hire and lessons as well. The exciting water sport is a combination of windsurfing, wakeboarding, and the waveriding techniques of surfing, plus the urge to fly.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing at Sanur Beach

Windsurfing at Sanur Beach

Windsurfing happens to be more popular in Sanur than surfing. Its steady wind and constant currents create conditions perfectly suited to a combination of speed and manoeuvres. For professionals, the wind at Serangan Island is always a few knots stronger than elsewhere and the reef breaks make ramp waves for better stunts.

The sport itself combines rules and aspects of both sailing and surfing but to steer a sail attached to a surfboard requires some serious skills. Sanur's waters are always suitable but the dry season serves you the best.
