Cafe Apa Kabar

The name literally means “How are you?” and this café is credited for its unique dining concept, mengibung, the idea of sharing a big plate of food with friends or family which was originally adopted from Balinese ceremonial feasts. In mengibung tradition all guests must eat and drink until no food remains, but it’s optional in here. You may customise your tray to suit your own needs or your gastric capacity. This style of meal is quite amusing for those who come from western countries since it is common in Asian cultures, especially countries with a large population. However, this café also serves old-fashioned nasi campur on a single portion plate, so the choice is yours. Majority vote?

Street Cafe

Assertively divergent from its name, this place is far from any street stereotype. Its elegant and modern accoutrements make the spacious indoors seem even more intimate for smaller groups. The music itself never represents the name; a grand piano in the main room truly jazzes the place up a little. Street Café offers the best of both worlds, in terms of eastern and western culinary styles. Nachos served with salsa and green chili, minced lamb sandwiches, or t-bone steaks are served alongside Vietnamese noodle soup and seafood platters. Simple desserts such as fruity ice cream and honeyed pancakes are irresistible. Dining at Street Café is equally pleasant in the air-conditioned interior or out in the fresh air.

Warung Mak Beng

This modest warung is listed as highly recommended in eatery guides and has served Sanur’s ravenous fishermen since 1941. The founder, Ketut Tjuki (usually called Mak -mom in English- Beng) claims to have patented the recipe of her famous snapper soup, grilled fish, and fish satay since 2005. The herbs and spices used vary from most Balinese seafood recipes, and the soup is clear yet rich and tasteful, a surreal possibility.
