Singaraja is the capital of the Buleleng regency in North Bali, and was the historic Dutch capital in Bali during colonial times. The town still retains much of its colonial vibe, with wide streets and antiquated buildings in old architectural styles. It makes a great destination for those interested in learning a bit of the island’s history. The town is only a 20-minute drive east from the more popular Lovina Beach resort area, where you’ll find many more hotels. It's a 4-hour drive up north from Kuta via the central route, passing the Bedugul highlands.

Highlights of Singaraja
The town of Singaraja is mostly visited by those staying in Lovina. You can find historical and sightseeing attractions such as the Puri Singaraja Royal Palace, the world’s largest repository of ‘lontar’ palm-leaf manuscripts known as the Gedong Kirtya Museum, and the old seaport of Singaraja with its onsite Pura Segara Temple. The old Chinese Temple of Ling Gwan Kiong is also popular. On the outskirts of town are a few notable temples, such as the Pura Beji Temple in the village of Sangsit. The selection of hotels in Singaraja alone, however, are rather limited.
Being the main commercial district of North Bali, Singaraja town is a great go-to for a local shopping scene and local eats. Numerous ‘warung’ roadside stalls and restaurants serve everything from the popular Balinese dish of ‘nasi campur’ mixed rice and ‘babi guling’ roast pork to Sumatran Padang cuisine. Fast-food chains such as KFC are in the centre of town. Most of the finer spots are to be found around nearby Lovina Beach. Le Jaenzan Restaurant is among the few here offering both a well-varied menu of western dishes and modern takes on local favourites. Nightlife, as expected, is at a minimum. A couple of cold beers and some friendly conversation is about all you can get up to after dark.
