Visiting Pemuteran in North Bali
Besides offering excellent diving and snorkelling, Pemuteran’s proximity to Menjangan Island make it a great starting point to discovering West Bali and the national park area. Overland sightseeing attractions include many important village temples, such as Pulaki, Pabean, Melanting and Kerta Kawat, all within an easy 3 km radius. Local shops along the Jalan Singaraja-Gilimanuk main road, range from selling snacks and refreshments, to arts and crafts, souvenirs and mobile SIM cards, while dive shops offering scuba gear rentals and dive tours abound. Great beachfront dining can be had at the resorts, while local roadside warung sell snacks, refreshments and light bites. Don’t expect to find much nightlife around Pemuteran.
The main draw of this area is Pemuteran Bay, which is home to the world’s largest artificial reef project. Here, you’ll find the largest area of shallow coral reefs on the island with calm waves year-round, making it a pleasant dive suitable for almost all diving skill levels. Collaborative conservation efforts among local communities, dive operators and resort owners through the Karang Lestari Foundation has made this two-hectare coastal site one of Indonesia’s best marine protected areas. Its coral nursery project comprises sunken metal structures fed with low electrical currents that help stimulate coral growth, otherwise known as ‘bio-rocks’. You can now find over two dozen nurseries in Pemuteran, outshining similar reef projects elsewhere around the globe.
