Banjar in North Bali

Everything you Need to Know about Banjar

Banjar is a hilly hamlet in North Bali, around 8km west from Lovina Beach. It's best known as home to the island’s largest Buddhist monastery, Brahmavihara Arama, and the Banjar Hot Springs. Often included on daytrips to North Bali, Banjar is also accessible from the area of Munduk to its south. The whole area offers breath-taking mountain and rice paddy landscapes.

The overland features of Banjar share much similarities with Munduk, with its agrarian communities and village plantations, growing everything from alphonse lavallee grapes, cacao, to Arabica coffee and flowers used in daily offerings by Balinese Hindus island-wide. Most visitors tend to stay nearby in Lovina and Munduk, while Banjar alone doesn’t have plenty of options of hotels or resorts.

What to Do in Banjar

The Banjar Hot Springs, as one of the main attractions in the region, sharing the same neighbourhood as the Brahmavihara Arama Buddhist monastery, therefore you’ll most likely visit both on your single day trip. The hot springs are centuries old, however, have been upgraded with modern facilities with pools, a restaurant, changing rooms, souvenir shops and recreational gardens onsite. For a nature adventure, you can opt to discover the Singsing Waterfall, with its hidden cascades best during the wet season (October through April), when the waterfall pours into a scenic rocky pool.

At the Brahmavihara Arama complex, up in the hills of Banjar, and around 1.5km west of the Banjar Hot Springs, you’ll discover a serene meditative setting, complete with lush tropical flower gardens, numerous meditation rooms, libraries, and an impressive mini replica of the world's largest Buddhist archaeological site, Borobudur, on its highest ground. The site is also a meditation place for Buddhist pilgrims during the holy day of Vesak or Asada. The monastery grounds and mini Borobudur are at its most attractive with monks in procession during these times.

Banjar Restaurants & Dining

Banjar falls short in terms of dining choices, apart from local roadside warung stalls serving local bites and refreshments. The closest options for modern dining are around nearby Lovina Beach. La Costa Beach Lounge on the beachfront of Temukus offers European cuisine, and has a great setup that’s ideal for romantic dinners, or lunches with friends and chilling at the seaside with friends. You can also stroll the pleasant beach as you wait for your orders. Also on the beachfront nearby is Krisna Funtastic Land, an amusement park that offers rides for kids to thrill-seeking adults, with a beachfront dining spot onsite.

Getting Around Banjar

Most hotels in North Bali offer shuttle services as well as motorcycle rentals that you can make use of during your stay. For the latter option, always stay safe by taking all safety measures necessary (motorcycle helmet and protective clothing). You won’t easily find a taxi roaming the village streets of Banjar.
