Warung Schnitzel is a cosy diner on Jalan Sriwedari, specialising in signature schnitzels created with innovative flavour combinations and unusual cooking techniques. It also regularly features menu highlights comprising different varieties of healthy home cooked cuisine, from chorizos, lasagne, to German sausages and bratwursts. A short stroll north from the Ubud art market, it is a great stopover for light but satisfying meals during your walks around the Ubud main centre and is a modest evening spot for dinner or to gather with the family or a circle of friends.
Right off Jalan Raya Ubud, Warung Schnitzel is the first noticeable venue on Jalan Sriwedari. The warung boasts three levels and used to be a house, retaining the attractive traditional Balinese architecture. The ground level is a brightly lit bar, its counter surrounded by tall chairs, and a snug space under the stairs providing a great spot to drink in good company.

Chef and restaurant manager Agung Yudha greeted us at front and led us up to the second floor. Here, the open kitchen is bustling with a crew of five cooking up a storm. This floor also has a slightly elevated patio with wooden tables providing street views over the quiet Sriwedari. It was a special lasagne Tuesday, and founding owner Mara Dowling was swiftly in and out of the kitchen, personally greeting guests between her adding finishing touches to dishes before they head to the tables.
Mara conceptualised Warung Schnitzel as a specialised diner, serving fresh, healthy and tasty cuisine in a relaxed, comfortable and friendly layout. It’s one of the few dining places in Ubud where you can enjoy really good schnitzels at great prices. Adding to that, a great congenial chef-owner and team who make you feel at home. On a regular basis, the menu comprises juicy, English farm style sausages with mixed herbs, healthy soups, and various bakes and grills.
Dishes are cooked using little or no salt and no flavour enhancers (salt and pepper are provided at your table). She claims 90% of the ingredients used are locally sourced, even the meats. Warung Schnitzel offers top quality traditional German sausages – grosse brastwursts, made hygienically by a German butcher right here in Bali. She also devised a curing method for the meats to guarantee freshness.
The regular specialty dish is a big piece of schnitzel, a salad and mash potatoes. Similar sides go with the Spanish chorizos and English bangers served with a choice of traditional hot, sweet brown and creamy coriander mayo mustards – perfect for those craving for some good home cooked sausages while in Ubud – at only 50,000 – 65,000 rupiah. Our special Tuesday treat was a generous fresh from-the-oven slab of chunky lasagne, served with fresh salad mix of tomato, avocado and carrot.
Dessert specials include Mara’s own hit recipe, apple cinnamon pudding served with caramel sauce and topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. The contrasting flavours of warming cinnamon and the sweetness of vanilla create a comforting combination. To wash that all down, you can either go for their range of healthy fruit shakes and smoothies, or their home made ginger tonic. On the drinks list you’ll find beers, juices and teas, and there’s a list for cocktail lovers where you’ll find a range of all-time favourites, from bloody mary, pina colada, to daiquiris and a vodka watermelon tini.
Warung Schnitzel is also great for gatherings. The third upper level features a more spacious layout, with six square tables that can be combined to welcome a group and one setup above the patio that features a cushioned lounger, perfect for a dinner shared by a family or group of up to seven. After dinner and on your way down, check out the range of impressive art items on display – exotic beaded necklaces, hairpins, and brass tabletops, the artist is none other than the chef-owner herself.
