Tulola’s little boutique on the corner of Jalan Petitenget in Seminyak is as appealing as the sterling silver and jewellery collections it houses. This palm-shaded and softly-lit store showcases the best of New York-born Balinese designer, Sri Luce Rusna’s collection, who has successfully struck a balance between East and West through her series of unique, one-off jewellery pieces.Intricately studded with various precious and semi-precious stones, Tulola’s designs are contemporary and progressive, but are all produced through age-old traditional techniques that fashionistas will adore and that collectors will admire.
Sri has an innate love for jewellery and design, being born in a family that is well known as among the island-based jewellery entrepreneurs and brought up surrounded by exotic Indonesian jewellery pieces. Following its beginnings in 2007, Tulola (short for her little daughter’s name, Putu Lola) opened the first store in Manhattan three years later. With the initial overseas success, Tulola returned to its island roots with the opening of this Seminyak flagship boutique.
The small but dazzling store filled with attractive cabinets filled with necklaces, rings, pendants and brooches, is located on the corner of Seminyak’s fashionable street, right across from the Cubana Bar & Grill and adjacent the newly opened L Hotel. Tulola has its dedicated workshop in Sukawati, which is one of Bali’s main silversmith centres. Six master artisans, who produce fine one-off pieces, handcraft every single one-of-a-kind piece at the workshop.
By reviving the traditional and presenting them in a more modern perspective, Tulola’s handcrafted sterling silver and 18-carat gold pieces mostly boast organic features, such as floral forms and butterflies that can be matched with various gemstones of different colours and sizes. Another recent collection features geometrical designs inspired by art deco styles.
Behind the sparkling cabinets is Dewi, the store manager, who happily assists you with any inquiries, and passionately takes you on an immersing tour through the collections of silver, gold and rose gold pieces adorned with various gems. It is quite an experience being able to observe, handle, and learn all about the creation process of each beautifully crafted piece, especially as most of the collection is limited editions. Ladies will also be glad to know that they welcome rerun orders of previous designs as well!
Each collection carries an inspired theme. Among its signature collections are cosmic inspired forms, such as starbursts and ‘solar orbit’ swirls, as found in the ‘northern star southern moon double drop’ earrings. One of the most strikingly traditional designs that get a contemporary treatment are the Balinese subeng studs, a heritage item associated with royalty. These come in geometric star forms and organic orchid designs with mother-of-pearl. For a super chic look there are a mix of Roman styled cuffs, Java bangles and golden cocktail rings, and orchid ‘cluster armour rings’ that adorn a whole length of your finger.
Tulola uses high quality materials, and through special relationships with gemmologists from Bangkok, Jaipur and New York, brings together the finest quality stones to combine with the silver and gold. Sri also commissions works from other places, as she believes each area has its own skill set and inspired motifs. You’ll enjoy the visual feast amongst rubies, emeralds, topaz, onyx, and amber. Besides the silver butterfly brooches you can also find various sparkly hair accessories.
With its early New York presence, it is small wonder that Tulola has gained the patronage of celebrities, the likes of Mischa Barton, Destiny’s Child former member Kelly Rowland, and rock diva Courtney Love. Tulola has also received considerable coverage in various international fashion magazines. Sri strongly believes and has somewhat proven that with slight contemporary treatment, Bali’s cultural affluence and heritage designs can breakthrough onto the international fashion scene.
