Head to Totem Room Escape Challenge Bali where you and your partner, or a circle of up to six friends, can enjoy a truly fun hour indoors in Seminyak. As a team, you are transported into intricately designed ‘worlds’ or game rooms and thrown right into a scenario with a series of puzzles that only your combined inner sleuths can solve. A digital timer ticking away overhead adds to the adrenaline rush as your brain cells are kept firing until your ultimate ‘escape’.
Currently there are four game rooms, each designed according to theme and offer different difficulty levels. Each game starts with a countdown timer set for 50 minutes. Locked in Darkland, the ‘easiest’ game, is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, and its puzzles have elements of the classic tale, such as the white rabbit’s clock and the mad tea party. At first, our team was in for something challenging, thus reluctant upon being suggested this ‘introductory’ level. Apparently, we underestimated.

All set, our band of five (you can play as a couple), enter a dimly lit room where a prologue video starts to play to give us an idea of the theme and backstory. Then the Totem guide shows us to an upright ladder, which apparently leads to a shaft where we all slide down… into an even darker room. Here, we huddle with no clear instructions and had to figure out what all these windows shut with padlocks mean. Only several playing cards provide minimal clues.
The puzzles are to be solved sequentially, and by no means should you celebrate too early upon accomplishing one. Just like the tale, the dreamy journey leads you through one landscape to perfectly different others. The props and décor are thoughtfully designed, and while tempting, some clearly marked items are not to be touched or forcefully yanked out for clues. After several successful trapdoor openings, the final realm has us all frustrated and baffled for a considerable amount of time. It involves laser pens pointing into specifically positioned mirrors to reveal a conclusive hint. Then, our time ran out.
Oh well. They did show us the remaining puzzle solutions though, just to please our fizzing curiosity. Next time, we’ll go for the next up on the difficulty scale, the Egyptian Secret. For up to four players, the story goes that you are slaves of Egypt, buried forever in a dark pharaoh’s ancient tomb. Or, try the intriguingly named Mission Impossible, for up to six, as you take on the roles of professional art thieves cracking your way to a vault of million dollar gold coins.
The ultimate game for up to four is Kidnapped which is closest to a detective story. Set out to save a girl by delivering a ransom, you must go through a series of tricks set by the criminal and save yourself from a planted bomb blast. Opened in July 2015, Totem Room Escape Challenge Bali is just a few meters from Seminyak Square where you can park, as parking at the spot can be an issue. Games are IDR 200,000 per person, and each successful play has free merchandise up for grabs. We got our team shot taken, to be added to the 'wall of fame' (we joined those marked 'failed', rather!).
