While Rush Bamboo Restaurant and Bar serves as the main breakfast and lunch spot for the resort’s villa guests, evenings take on a more intimate atmosphere with dinners augmented by subtle candlelight and the soft glow of floating tea lights and the underwater-lit pool. Weekly dinner specials include rijsttafel dinners that let you sample the diversity of dishes from the Indonesian archipelago.
Most of the selections at Rush Bamboo are fusion dishes, created by Executive Chef Banjar. Unique creations include schnitzel and sliced tenderloin steak sandwiches, pastas and pizzas, and the assorted satay dish of sate campur and the all-time Balinese favourite of babi guling spit-roast pork on the mains. The lunch and dinner menu also presents American-style cheeseburgers made with homemade beef patties and served with melted cheese, caramelised onions, and homemade coleslaw, with crispy French fries on the sides. Salads, sandwiches and pastas range between IDR 65,000-110,000.
The Indonesian-inspired section includes Chef Banjar’s take on the world-famous beef rendang, also referred to, by foodies, as ‘the heavenly caramelised beef curry from West Sumatra’. Of course, there’s the omnipresent nasi goreng Indonesian fried rice, but with added variations available such as the richer nasi goreng mawut hailing from Surabaya, East Java. Due to the lengthy process involved, Bali’s own favourite babi guling must be booked 24 hours in advance – a long wait, but one that is totally worth it.
Seafood lovers may opt for the Balinese mixed seafood platter, comprising grilled snapper, squid, prawns, scallops and tuna marinated in traditional Balinese turmeric paste, grilled and served with water spinach salad, lemongrass salsa and white or brown rice on the sides. We settled for an avocado orange and pear salad for starters, which is a truly refreshing opener with its sweet and zesty honey-and-orange dressing. This is before our mouth-watering pan-roasted barramundi, served with herbs, baby potatoes, fennel and a semi-dried tomato salad with capers and garlic butter sauce.
The dessert selections are irresistible and include chocolate lava and chocolate marble cheesecake, both of which are a chocolate lovers’ treat and are served with strawberry sauce and vanilla ice cream. Indonesian heritage desserts worth trying includes banana fritters (known as pisang goreng) served with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream, as well as the klapper tart - a rich coconut custard baked with cinnamon and vanilla.
The alfresco setting of Rush Bamboo Restaurant and Baralso makes it an ideal spot to simply spend your afternoon following your day out and about in Seminyak. The poolside and draped cabanas welcome you to chill out with afternoon teas or to indulge in the happy hour specials from the bar, be it buckets of beer or a refreshing cocktail. Stay on for Friday nights to enjoy the pleasant Indonesian rijsttafel dinners, which enables you to share a feast of traditional Indonesian cuisine. If you’re keen on learning some Indonesian cooking, the restaurant also features an enjoyable Jimbaran-style cooking class.
