Fine Indonesian Dining in Seminyak

(Update: Republilk 45 closed down in March 2017, and re-opens as Som Chai Restaurant, boasting a Thai dining concept under the new management of the Sarong and Mama San restaurant group) 

Republik 45 is a great go-to place if you’re up for some Indonesian dining around Seminyak in a refined and stylish setting. The restaurant’s main dining hall is spacious, with a bar and private dining sections that are bordered by Balinese style murals and leafy wall gardens. Specialties to try here include creative takes on famous Indonesian dishes, such as ‘beef rendang’ and Balinese inspired desserts.

Located right on the main road connecting the northern part of Seminyak and Kerobokan, Republik 45’s façade is eye-catching with its vertical garden roof panel. Into the main hall, enjoy chic décor in a beautiful, open-air, lounge setting. Besides an extensive a la carte menu, the best offerings here are presented on its degustation menu, crafted by Balinese Executive Chef Ketut Udiana, a former apprentice of chef Chris Salans of Mozaic Ubud fame.

The degustation menus (IDR 395,000 – 435,000) features up to seven courses, although you’ll also have the option of a short two-course offering for only IDR 115,000, all showcasing the exotic flavours of the Indonesian islands, from Sumatra to Bali. On any regular lunch or dinner, go a la carte for the house specials, which include the ever popular ‘rendang’ and a Balinese crispy fried duck (IDR 225,000), all prepared with the traditional blend of aromatic spices.

You can also enjoy seafood and juicy satays galore, as well as try out a different kind of steamed rice – yellow turmeric version known as ‘nasi kuning’, alongside the ever popular ‘nasi goreng’ Indonesian style fried rice. Besides the delightful Balinese ‘klepon’ to round off your experience at Republik 45, there’s a whole range of traditional cakes to enjoy such as ‘nagasari’ steamed rice flour cake with banana slices inside, and ‘pisang rai’, a steamed version of fritters.

From the fully stocked bar, there’s an extensive wine list as well as signature cocktails, with must-tries that include a fruit martini called The Kintamani, shaken with a spicy blend of red chili and basil (IDR 150,000 per serving, which is on the pricier edge for the outer Seminyak region). Another highlight is its Therapy Wednesdays, with free flow wine tastings from 20:00, followed by ‘two-for-one’ brand sponsored cocktail promos at 21:00.

The regular crowd here is a mix of Seminyak expatriates and visitors, most of whom have grown fond of the regular evening highlights, such as the charitable ‘Pasar Malam’. This special dinner highlight showcases traditional Indonesian street food alongside creative local arts, handicrafts and fashion items that you can purchase with proceedings going to a good cause, together with good live music. Families welcome.
