As one of the island’s first malls, Ramayana Mal Bali in Denpasar offers a great thrift shopping experience, especially for its wide range of clothing items spread well over its four floors. Part of the Indonesian mall chain, the mall opened in 1997 as the first venture outside Java. The mall is located on the right-hand side of the one-way Jalan Diponegoro, and is hard to miss with its orange brick façade. Mostly attracting a local clientele with local prices, it’s a great stopover for some good deals.
At the ground level of Ramayana Mal Bali, you’ll find a choice of small family restaurants including a Pizza Hut, and bakeries and ice cream stalls surrounding its central atrium water feature, which also forms the base of the mall’s main stairways. However, the floors are conveniently connected by the more popular escalators on each side. There’s an optician where you can get your eyes checked for free, have your frames adjusted, or choose from original Oakleys and Ray-Bans among the designer shades.

Ramayana Mal Bali has a local Indonesian department store vibe which is casual and easy-going. Sections clearly divided among ladies’ wear, menswear and a section for babies and kids complete with toys. Most of the labels are Indonesian, such as Contempo, Lea Jeans and Yongki Komaladi leather footwear, but are well-known for their quality since some factories are also contractors for international fashion and shoe brands. A great quality shirt ranges between USD 4 and 18 (IDR 50,000 and 250,000), while a pair of leather shoes USD 6 to 40 (IDR 75,000 to 550,000).
For some fun and recreation, the uppermost level comprises game arcades, another food court with great Indonesian snacks and dishes; an entertainment centre complete with a bowling alley, reflexology centres and salons for a good haircut. There are authorised money changers at hand on the ground level to change your dollars – just remember to count your notes well before leaving the counter. Positioned a significant distance from the main touristy areas of the island’s south, Ramayana Mal Bali is definitely worth the fun trip for budget travellers and weekend shoppers.
