Paul Ropp is a Bali-based fashion label that fashionistas travelling to Bali should have on top of their lists. You’ll easily find one of its high-end boutiques in the major resort areas such as Ubud and its home area of Seminyak, while its flagship store is right on the main Jalan Raya Uluwatu Road in Jimbaran. Inside you will find handmade ‘head-to-toe’ fashion items for women and also men, mostly made from handwoven and hand-dyed cotton and silk.
The designs and creations by its eponymous New York designer are all funky and brightly colourful, somewhat harking back to the styles of the 60s and 70s. Inspired by his travels, ultimately settling on the island of Bali where he set up production and an eventual fashion empire, Paul Ropp’s designs loosely feature styles and patterns of India, Indonesia and Asia, a combination that became distinctive throughout his line.
Staying true to its inspirations, all fabrics and materials in Paul Ropp’s line are handmade and produced using traditional techniques – most fabrics like natural silks and chiffons are made in India. Its production house in Seminyak, Bali, are where skilled artisans spend a great deal of time and energy creating each piece based on his original designs. This may be one of the reasons behind its price tags, as a result of such originality and rarity.
Elegant silken ladies’ evening resort dresses and kaftans in rich colour tones start from USD 329. A bright yellow and orange silk sari ‘mirage skirt’ that is great for beach or lawn parties, designed in three different patterns and finished in a golden bead-banded waist, is at USD 580. For the guys, selections include embroidered cotton print and patchwork ‘cowboy’ shirts, starting from USD 335. All are flowing, lightweight and great for the tropics.
To mix and match, Paul Ropp also features a collection of jewelleries and accessories, ranging from ornamental belts, dangle earrings and bangles made from cotton and silk (USD 65 – 1,300). Soft, hand-cut chiffon print embroidery shawls start at USD 219 a length. A highly decorative, light blue feather bag, handmade and paired with matching tassels is USD 247, while an African Abra necklace featuring an embroidered flower hand available in four flower themes, is USD 170.
Drop into any Paul Ropp shop in Bali and you are guaranteed originality and quality, and most of the handmade ready-to-wear pieces also happen to be one-off items. Based on the attention to detail, amount of time and energy that goes to each length of fabric and end piece of clothing, garments are claimed to last a lifetime, and not just a season.
