  • Paon Beachclub in Bali

A Great Family Getaway in Tanjung Benoa

    0

Among the island’s increasingly popular beach clubs, Paon Beachclub lies on the eastern shores of the Tanjung Benoa peninsula, just north of the Conrad Bali. Located within the multipurpose Taman Bhagawan complex, Paon offers a great combination of poolside lawns, sea views and breezes, and excellent international and local menus along with an exciting ‘Sunday market’ program for families.

Meaning ‘Kitchen’ in Balinese, Paon lives up to its name offering great takes on international cuisine and authentic Indonesian dishes served infused with fresh spices. It also serves a good selection of cocktails and signature drinks as well, making it a great place to try quality Indonesian selections and to simply chill out with a view.

  • Entering the Taman Bhagawan complex makes you feel like royalty, as the towering front gate resembles that of a Javanese palace, complete with separate joglo structures (traditional Javanese wooden houses of nobility) that serve as different venues for bespoke events – the most recent being a live acoustic concert by Jason Mraz. Inside you will find open sea views of the peninsular coast beyond a lawn that occupies its central compound. The 7x22m pool enclosed by wooden sundecks, just steps away from the palm-fringed coastline, serves as an ideal centrepiece for gatherings. On the coast is a small open pavilion with rocking chairs, simply the best place to be with a cocktail in hand.

The architectural pieces that dot the venue comprise the main Joglo Agung, its adjacent Joglo North, and a Joglo South. An open-air overpass lined with old railway sleepers adjoins the Agung and North joglos. Its turquoise tiles and a bar made of reclaimed fishing boats give it a light airy atmosphere. Joglo South offers wider coastal views and is equipped with a bar. All feature elaborately carved teakwood columns and open beam ceilings. Its detailed motifs and warm yellow tiles are reminiscent of an old Indonesia era, bringing a bright and sunny feel that is ideal for gala events.

Paon serves food and drinks that are as appealing as its landscapes. Driven by seasonal delicacies and a deep respect for the freshest ingredients available, Paon’s menu lets you explore the diversity of flavours from around the archipelago. Here, you’ll find international and Indonesian favourites, but with a twist. Try the succulent grilled barbecued pork ribs served with baby green beans, or go for the ayam betutu (Bali’s famous juicy, slow-cooked chicken) served with steaming white rice and authentic Balinese fresh shallot sambal. Among the Western delights include the pan-seared salmon fillet with pumpkin sauce, or a bowlful of herb-infused fresh clams.

Likewise, the drinks list is an exciting and creative mix featuring seasonal fruits and imported spirits. Among the refreshing blends to try is a strawberry honey cooler that suits the tropical seaside atmosphere. Here you will also have the chance to try the famous Indonesian herbal health tonics known as jamu. Service is attentive and swift, delivered by a team of well-trained staff who know about the history of the joglos as well as the fare.

The main highlight at Paon is Pasar Minggu, literally its ‘Sunday Market’ program, when the poolside and open lawns host various fun family activities such as ball games and kids’ slides, an inflated bouncy castle play land, colouring stations, sandy playgrounds, arts and crafts activities, kites and hula hoops, while parents can simply lounge about under the sun or shade. Interactive food stalls line the gardens and there are beers at discount prices. Mom can browse through the shopping kiosks while kids under eight enjoy free meals. Those behind Paon’s concept meant it to be a venue for families where kids can run, play and swim to their hearts’ content, while the parents can dine to theirs. The Sunday market welcomes visitors 11:00-16:00.
