Padanggalak Beach in Sanur

Kite Flying Beach in Bali

Padanggalak Beach is the northernmost beach of the whole coastal stretch of Sanur. It’s best known as the main event venue for the annual Bali Kites Festival, which takes place every July. Compared to the rest of Sanur’s beaches to its south, not much can be said about Padanggalak’s own sand and surf. The shoreline is narrow, combined with concrete wave breakers adjoining a beach footpath. On the positive side, the beach area offers some of the island’s most unique urban explorations.

What to See at Padanggalak Beach

Come June or July, during Bali’s so-called windy season, Padanggalak is the main venue for Bali’s biggest kiting event. A 10 to 20-knot onshore wind, as well as the spacious grassy beachfront field, make it the ideal place for Bali’s traditional flying hobbyists. Hundreds of competing kite troupes gather from all over the island to pilot their traditional kites here. Often, the troupes pilot their flying giants alongside international teams, who fly modern kites of various shapes and sizes.

Padanggalak Beach is home to one of Bali’s most interesting ‘ghost towns’. Taman Festival Bali is an abandoned amusement park at the beach’s northern end. It’s far away from the main Sanur crowds, which just adds to its eeriness. From the front, you’ll easily see the park’s deserted main entrance gates, ticket booths, and some of its empty cafeterias. The deteriorated main buildings, with partly collapsed roofs, all make for a creepy atmosphere, even in broad daylight. Dense foliage and creeper vines have grown over broken windows and ornamental stone figures loom over the open spaces, making it a great post-apocalyptic setting to test your nerves. Exploring abandoned buildings is not entirely safe, so please exercise extreme caution, if you choose to visit.
