Meja Kitchen & Bar at the IZE Seminyak Hotel in Seminyak is a stylish two-level business on the roadside of Jalan Kayu Aya, featuring a futuristic design and serving fusion Asian cuisine with a great selection of cocktails. It’s hard to miss with its glowing cool blue neon lighting and handwritten style signage, and an impressive interplay of shark tooth-like steel panels that form its façade. At ground level there are wooden decks behind subtly lit water features for alfresco street-view options, and inside is a cosy realm with whitewashed walls and retro styling, a real contrast to its futuristic exteriors. Upstairs is another modern setup with a cool lounge and bar overlooking the street.
If you’re trying to escape the heat of the day and feeling a bit peckish, Meja’s main dining room serves as a great spot to unwind and refill. Parquet flooring, soft teal accents with interesting wall features, columns featuring vintage tea sets and toys add to its soothing ambiance. The exterior design partly shares the modern features of IZE, making it one of the most standout venues along the restaurant-lined street. The food that comes out from its open kitchen falls into the ‘exotic’ category, with creations from Meja Kitchen’s Executive Chef Bradley Charles Harrison who mixes a modern menu with traditional inspirations. Great selections to try include crab or mahi-mahi served with chive butter mash, wonderful duck or chicken and lime risottos, and coffee-rubbed beef burger.
Chef Bradley’s concept is quite simple; to provide a healthy choice of comfort food amongst the myriad of top quality restaurants that line the strip. He has created Meja’s menu as a combined portfolio inspired from his travels around the globe. All the selections are MSG-free. Some of the afters to relish include banana pancake with pistachio and mascarpone cheese, chocolate brownie, and meringue. Meja has set menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, all reasonably priced.
When it’s time to chill head upstairs to the cosy lounge and bar. Similarly, it features wooden flooring, but with minimal décor and subtler lighting. The bar occupies one side of the room flanked by a movable turntable setup where DJs regularly spin groovy lounge music, and comfortable plush-top sofas line the opposite side. Great cocktails from the bar include vanilla and pomegranate mojitos, an interestingly named maple bacon martini, and there’s a host of other interesting mojito flavours constantly featured following experimentations by Meja’s team of mixologists. With two levels and different settings, Meja is a great spot to dine, chill and watch Seminyak’s nightlife steadily kick in.
