Mama’s German Restaurant in Bali

24 Hour Restaurant in Legian

Mama’s German Restaurant is one of the most prominent bistros along the main strip of Jalan Legian serving German cuisine, and is a great option if you’re up for some quality meats served in generously sized portions. The restaurant is a convenient stopover on leisure walks midway along the walking street, and features a cosy bar where you can enjoy its full selection of cocktails and cold beers by the bottle and by the tap. Moreover, Mama’s is open 24 hours!

Meat lovers are in for a treat at Mama’s German Restaurant, with its satisfying selections of pork, beef and poultry sausages, which are all courtesy of Soejasch Bali, a locally-based, premium European meats company that has a team of German master butchers producing its delicatessen bratwursts, wieners and cold cuts for Mama’s, as well as many other restaurants on the island. Mama’s menu also features some Mediterranean and Indonesian selections.

The meat servings at Mama’s do tend to be on the heavy side, with Bavarian style favourites that include a meat loaf platter (IDR 96,500 or USD 7.25) with layers of thinly sliced and braised pork topped with a sunny-side up; a beef goulash (IDR 108,500 or USD 8), and a slow-braised beef roulade (IDR 125,500 or USD 9.45). Each is served with your choice of sides, from bread dumplings, pan-fried potatoes, sauerkraut or salads from the salad bar or seasonal vegetables.

However, Mama’s German Restaurant Bali has always lured its loyal diners with one signature dish. Known as the Mama’s Bavarian Pork Knuckle (IDR 194,500 or USD 14.60), this hefty, single kilogram feast comes served for one, but is actually enough to satisfy two, and features a crispy shell of crackling that wraps its tender and juicy meat. The serving comes with three baguette slices, together with your choice of salads and sides.

Mama’s Bali is easily to spot – a large signage with its name in red and a colourfully painted Swiss cow figure are eye-catchers when walking down Jalan Legian. Friendly service staff clad in Bavarian red and white are on hand to serve beers or classical cocktails, which cost between IDR 65,000–85,000 (USD 5-6.5), a small glass of cold Bintang by the draft is IDR 25,000 (USD 2), or you could hail for their 1.5 litre ‘jar’ and get in the Oktoberfest mood for IDR 114,000 (USD 8.50).
