I AM Bali 3D Interactive Art Museum

Trick-Eye Art Museum in Denpasar

I AM Bali 3D Museum is one of the most fun places to spend a half day out with family and friends in Bali’s provincial capital of Denpasar, particularly if you’re up for some crazy group photos. This fun and interactive art gallery is located right under the city’s major landmark, the Bajra Sandhi Museum in the Puputan Square, and houses dozens of different three-dimensional trick-art murals to experiment with together. Themes range from rural Bali and agricultural life to popular culture and children’s themes such as Disney cartoons and Pokémon.

To get into the I AM Bali 3D Museum, you’ll need to locate the gates at the southern side of the monument’s base, where the fun immediately starts. This whole hallway is elaborately painted to resemble the ‘platform nine and three-quarters’ from Harry Potter, from which most of the art installations of the lobby is also inspired. Adjacent to the ticket booth is a waiting area and shoe deposit spot designed like a giant stack of books, with famous titles on their spines. Socks are compulsory throughout the museum and, if you didn’t bring any, cheap single-use ones are available with ticket purchases.

The first in the series of life-size trick-eye art murals includes African wildlife, where you can ‘sit’ beside a tiger or pose against the trunk of an elephant. Then, further along the hall, the scenes start to get crazier and funnier, such as propping your head to give the illusion you’ve stuck it in a bull’s rear end (trust us, it looks super silly given the right camera angle), or pulling Superman’s briefs as he flies. You can always trust your camera or phone to the helpful guides, who are on standby and can help you with poses when your own ideas run dry.

Besides 3D murals, you’ll have loads of fun inside a collection of Ames rooms, installations that give the illusion of ‘levitation’, a mirror maze and a haunted-theme room with glow-in-the-dark and backlight ghost features for some thrills. There’s even a dedicated section with an upside-down classroom, where you can take your shots to look as if you’re dancing on the ceiling. When you’ve maxed out your memory cards, seek some refreshments at the canteen beside the ticket booth. Tickets are IDR 120,000 (around USD 9) per person.
