Jewellery Making and Art Classes in Canggu

House of Alaia is a small studio on the main Jalan Batu Bolong route in Canggu that offers jewellery making and art classes. Besides showcasing its own collection of exquisite jewellery pieces by its two designer founders, Nea and Christy, the workshop lets you bring your own design and make your own precious keepsake or a gift meant for someone special. Classes cater to individuals or couples, kids and groups, and you can also go for multiple sessions to learn techniques in-depth.

Those with the slightest idea about jewellery-making can gain a whole new perspective and appreciation for the art upon completing an intricate ring, pendant or bracelet that they have created all by themselves. House of Alaia has three-hour introductory classes, where you can pick up the basics of metalwork and work your way through with provided wires or sheets and under the guidance of their team of local silversmiths, to form your own masterpiece. This beginner’s class is available Monday to Friday, and is suitable for kids aged seven and up.

  • A beginner’s class at House of Alaia is at USD 150 per person. A typical course is broken down as follows. Firstly, you get acquainted with the basics; different sets of tools required for sawing and shaping, then a bit of stamping and hammering to acquire the desired shapes to start off with. Then there’s a bit of soldering, followed by sanding and polishing, and whole lot of other techniques. Mostly throughout the process, you’ll get to know how to handle silver, and most importantly, how to do them safely.

To keep the learning curve great, class sizes are usually kept small, with no more than six students per session. You only need to bring along an idea or inspiration, perhaps in a sketch, for your own special design, and all the tools are provided to make your dream design a reality. Or, check out House of Alaia’s own collection for some inspiration. There’s ‘The Anchor’ collection inspired by the seafaring spirit, or the ‘Fabrics of Life’ with intricate nature and leaf designs in pendants and earrings. After a session, you’ll be able to take your very own unique piece of jewellery back home.
