Gimme Shelter in Canggu

Rock n’ Roll Bar in Bali

Gimme Shelter is a live music venue in Canggu. It’s one of very few bars in the area dedicated to live music and the young, local rock n’ roll crowd. The name itself recalls the seminal Rolling Stones’ classic. It’s a great hangout in Canggu to enjoy the lively nightlife scene well into the wee hours. Regular gigs onstage play anything from rock n’ roll and rockabilly, to grunge, punk, and metal. The spot was founded and is curated by internationally-known Balinese blues performer, Made Putrawan, better known by his stage name, Made J.

Drinks and Live Music at Gimme Shelter

You can easily find this spot on Jalan Lingkar Nelayan, which branches right off from Jalan Batu Bolong street. It opens at dusk, catering to night owls and those looking for a venue that’s fun and loud. Luckily for the neighbours though, the walls are soundproofed. Inside, you’ll find a somewhat underground vibe. In terms of live bands, there’s a good mix of Balinese rock stars (think Superman Is Dead or Made J himself). However, there’ll be plenty of indie bands and local performers you may never have heard of  usually rocking the stage with their covers or, on occasion, their own raw and original material.

You can expect the place get very lively on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with things kicking off from 19:00. There are open mic sessions every Monday, offering a chance to express your inner rock star should you feel inclined. The bar offers a decent selection of booze to fuel the evening with the signature shot here entitled Bensin - aptly named after the local word for “petrol”. Happy hour is from 22:00 to 23:00. Gimme Shelter has free entry most nights, but for special featured gigs, you can expect to pay a cover charge of around IDR 30,000 (USD 2.40) at the door.
