Drifter Surf Shop in Bali

Surf Art, Fashion and Espresso in Seminyak

Drifter Surf Shop is an original wave rider lifestyle and boutique concept located on the shop-and-restaurant-lined Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak. It presents a totally different approach; one that is aimed at surf culture and the ‘free soul’ of the sport, as conceived by its founders Jake Mackenzie and Tim Russo. Drifter has gained popularity as the spot on Seminyak’s Jalan Kayu Aya for retro and cool, with themed interiors, a coffee bar and a cosy hangout area. The store is hard to miss – its signage in large letters carved from colourful driftwood above its windows.

Window shopping, you’d easily think it’s merely surfboards galore. But step inside and you’re surrounded by a full array of great works by independent artists and a vast collection of boards, apparel and gear. Hanging from the ceilings, and along the display rows are colourful boards of different shapes and size including Outer Island single fin boards, limited edition V Flex and Flex tail guns, Dick Van Stralen quad and rocket fish and Al Merrick Pods. Die-hard dudes will love the gorgeously crafted wooden masterpieces such as the Danny Hess collection flown all the way from San Francisco. Skaters will also find bliss here in the Raised By Wolves skateboard collections from down under, together with a selection of Macbeth shoes.

In line with its rare boards, Drifter is also a place to appreciate eclectic fashion brands that you won’t find at regular stores in Bali. Ladies will love the revolutionary designs of ATG Women neoprene bikinis, and other women’s active labels such as Mikoh Swimwear and Tallow Gallery. For a bit of local inspiration from eastern Indonesia, there are exotic backpacks made from traditional Sumba ‘ikat’ cloth. To complement your ‘hang loose’ looks, a jewellery selection from Bahgsu Jewels includes shark’s tooth necklaces, crystals, amethyst, turquoise, and beautiful hammered silver and gold rings.

There’s a snug coffee corner inside, flanked by shelves of hand-selected books and a myriad of collected memorabilia. The impressive library boasts titles from thrillers to memoirs – American Psycho, Rastafari, The Tao of Physics, Musashi, Shogun, The Bhagavad-Gita and Anthony Kiedis’s biography. Look out for its collection of rare DVDs and other exceptional treasures on display, such as a signed album cover of Morning of The Earth by the surf-filmmaking legend Albert Falzon. After a long and insightful browse of the shop, this cosy spot is a great retreat where you can grab one of the good reads or whip out your laptop and sink into the cushions with a freshly ground espresso, latte or cappuccino brewed with Indonesia’s finest Mandailing Estate coffee beans from Sumatra.

The large selection of artwork, photography and memorabilia are all available for purchase. Each and every piece is a personally handpicked selection by Jake or Tim from their surf tours and travels, or via artists and photographers who have dropped by on their journeys. Drifter is a great place to be for some inspiration – even for non-surfers, as you get a sense of the free ‘surfing spirit’ through some of the artwork. For instance, a meticulously written chalk board reads a bit of surf wisdom, “you are awesome, believe in yourself, embrace your life's passion, find your courage, listen more than you speak, but when you have something to say speak up, and do what you love”.
