  • Charlie Bar & Bistro Bali

Suave Hangout, Cocktails and Good Food in Seminyak

    0

(Charlie Bar & Bistro closed down in September 2014)

Charlie Bar & Bistro presents a stylish three-level ‘mansion’ on Seminyak’s Jalan Petitenget. The venue’s founding team transformed what was once a furniture shop into the stylish culinary hangout that it is now, located only a short distance on Petitenget from the main Seminyak-Kerobokan junction. Charlie now serves as the first dining and hangout spot you’ll come across on Petitenget, adding to a growing list of world-class venues that line the famous Seminyak street.

Step inside midday and you’ll find Charlie’s bistro and bakery on the ground floor, with its oval counter featuring muffins, croissants, delicious Danish pastries and gourmet breads of all sorts, including fresh-baked pretzels. A great stopover for a coffee break on your travels throughout this northern side of Seminyak, the first-floor space also serves a wide selection of teas and juices to go with fragrant, fresh-from-the-oven nibbles. Don’t miss the selections of enticing macaroons and cakes on display if you’re looking for a sweeter experience.

  • Come evening and head upstairs to Charlie’s gorgeous main dining area. Soft lighting fills the interior with a warm glow from chandeliers and elegant light fixtures while vintage, jazzy tunes fill the air, creating atmospheric dining moments.

Charlie’s menu, designed by award-winning Chef Meidy Zuhri, presents classic international cuisine prepared with French techniques. Great steak selections include their best-selling filet mignon a la Charlie, made with prime Australian beef and served with pommes Anna, erengi mushrooms and Bordelaise sauce at IDR 240,000. Another treat for meat-lovers are oven-baked baby pork ribs marinated in special sauce and served with potato wedges. There are many other house specialties worth a try – all reasonably priced. A choice of seafood and vegetarian dishes is also available.

The award-winning bar presents a range of signature cocktails specially tailored by world-class mixologist Carson Quinn. The cocktail recipes are exotic and use only natural in-house syrups and infusions, with no sugar added. Be there on Mondays for some great deals, such as a ‘two for one’ arrangement, while on any given evening they’re IDR 95,000 a glass. Martinis to try include a refreshing raspberry martini or the uplifting espresso martini that comes with a wonderful layer of crema. Its pink dragon fruit-infused gin called the Naga fizz (‘naga’ is dragon in the local tongue) comes dry shaken with lemon juice, rose syrup and egg whites, then topped with seltzer and a red rose as garnish.

Charlie also takes pride as the only bar on the island so far to serve its on-the-rocks selections with hand-carved crystal-clear ice cubes. So try not to stand there aghast in front of the bartender as he presents a long saw underneath the dim lighting... then starts cutting through and chipping at the solid block of ice. It proves to be a fun and unique sight, where we can forget about the all-too common fancy bartending flairs of mixing and twirling – this is the new art form of cocktail ice making.
