Bella Cucina, the signature Italian restaurant at the InterContinental Bali Resort, is quite the hidden gem tucked behind the resort’s southernmost beachfront gardens. This fine dining restaurant opens for dinner every evening, serving authentic cuisine prepared by the passionate and congenial chef, Riccardo Ioanna. Only steps away from the sands of the scenic Jimbaran Bay, the restaurant boasts an elegantly furnished pavilion and a candlelit alfresco dining area where guests can tuck into a range of Italian classics from their al la carte menu or buffet spread, all whilst enjoying the Bali’s dramatic sunsets.
Its name easily translates to ‘beautiful kitchen’, and long-time visitors may still remember it as ‘Bella Singaraja’ prior to its slight revamp in 2013. Chef Riccardo’s classic Italian recipes come all the way from his own hometown of Apulia, known for its sunny Adriatic coast and seriously good food, and Bella Cucina also puts together regional specialties from all around Italy with innovative twists and modern presentation for a comprehensive Italian dining experience not easily found elsewhere.

The latest offerings at Bella Cucina include Sunday Brunches with select a la carte menus, together with its laidback ‘Made in Italy’ trattoria style feasts every Monday, which present Italian classics, wine, live music and fun. From only IDR 550,000 per person (subject to tax and service charge), you can savour tasty bites from the antipasti buffet, followed by classic pastas as mains and wonderful sweets and desserts. The buffets present offerings from every region in Italy, laid out in the restaurant’s centrepiece open kitchen.
We freely make our several rounds to the brightly laid out buffet with a miniature leaning tower of Pisa in its middle, and help ourselves to mixed bean soup from Umbria, as well as small-portioned delights under heating lamps such as spinach and ricotta-stuffed cannelloni with béchamel sauce from Emilia Romagna, as well as a baked whole red snapper with potato, black olives and white wine sauce that hails from the coastal north-western region of Liguria. In between, there’s always the fun chef to show us around, sharing some insights on the delightful morsels and their origins.
Main course is a choice from six tempting dishes from different regions. Saffron risotto, with green bean, sun-dried tomatoes and fennel juice foam or ‘spuma di finocchi’ from Piedmont and a squid ink spaghetti from Sicily offer a lighter option, while meat lovers may opt for the pappardelle pasta with braised oxtail and vegetable mirepoix and veal jus reduction from Lombardia, or the Lazio Parma ham with sage, green peas and red onion ragout. A pan-fried Scottish salmon with Romaine artichoke, pork bacon, sliced fennel and pink pepper corn is also a superb choice.
The desserts are laid out near the hallway in front of the wine cellar, with colourful vials of tiramisu, fruitcakes; mini lemon tarts with roasted meringue, Sicilian pistachio éclairs, zabaiones (egg custards) and macaroons. Wine lovers will approve of the fully-stocked cellar at Bella Cucina, featuring a fine selection of international wines and champagnes, with a cellar master on standby who can host special tastings before and after dinner, as well as pairing meal choices with various vintages.
Our sunset-to-starlit Italian dining experience at Bella Cucina at the stunning InterContinental Bali Resort was blessed with good weather, and a table at the charming outdoor terrace is a perfect choice, providing views that extend to the fire torch-lit tropical gardens. Tables on the lawn also make for truly romantic moments, and with an Italian chef who goes around spreading cheers and sharing light jokes, alongside a strolling trio performing songs by request, dining here can also be fun at the same time.
