There are many ways to discover ‘real’ Bali... but what could be more exhilarating than to take on the jungle tracks of Bali’s unspoiled parts on compact buggies and ATVs? The Bali Quad and Bali Buggy tours take you to discover Bali’s heartland and rural village scenes on off-road four-wheelers that whiz through all kinds of terrain with ease.
Payangan lies higher up north from the more familiar Ubud area, where cool temperatures and lush hillsides make for the ultimate stress relief. With this tour on site, it just got better.

Guides brief all the safety aspects and instructions before you go. Then it is time to enter the cockpits and take the minis for a spin around an enjoyable trial lap at a designated racecourse. As complete beginners, we had no idea about the controls. Surprisingly, these wonderful little vehicles were easy to operate. The two-seaters have semi-automatic gears; all you need to do is gas and brake. Key in, power on, helmet and seat straps fastened, and you’re ready to roll.
After a couple of spins around the course, you line up in convoy, led by a tour scout on a trail bike. The four-stroke engines leap to life as you put the pedal to the metal. Speed freaks will adore the many straight tracks with dirt ‘mini-ramps’ on them, and the rivalry is on as to who takes over the most.
Payangan is one of the oldest mountain villages of Bali. The area is famous for the exotic fruit, salak, so often called ‘snakeskin fruit’. Salak farms are a dominant sight along the way, intriguing tour participants with their spiny palm branches and odd-looking hedges. To ensure that the natural environment is undisturbed, and to give all participants utmost assistance and service, this tour normally only allows small groups of up to six vehicles.
For the cultural and nature inclined, several highlight stopovers dot the routes. Among them is a hilly and large field with magnificent mountain views, and several village temples packed with interesting history. For the super energetic, two-in-one tour options are available. The first is a combination of buggy driving through the northern part of Payangan, then towards the ATV sheds south. Buffet lunch is served here, before you roll on with another half day on the quads.
The practice course allows you to get a hang of the acceleration thumb-levers. Even first-timers used to throttles on motorcycles may need slight adjusting. No feet on the ground at anytime whatsoever, helmet on, saddle comfortably, right thumb on lever… and off you go.
