Mount Batukaru in Central Bali towers over the local landscape and is the second highest mountain to Mount Agung (3142m). Mount Batukaru is an extinct volcano and one of the prettiest places in Bali.
The word Batukaru means "The Coconut Shell Rock" and all local temples have a shrine dedicated to the spirit of the mountain. The serene Lake Bratan fills the ancient crater of Mount Batukaru and the local people honour the goddess of the lake at the temple of Pura luhur Watukaru, built high on its slopes.
