Bali Scuba Diving

Bali Activities

Diving in Bali offers a thriving and vibrant underwater world with some excellent dive sites.

The warm waters are abundant with extensive coral reefs and magnificent marine life with sharks, turtles and manta rays. Spectacular dives include drop off walls, wreck diving and drift diving.

Dive centres operate from all the main resort areas offering both daytrips and PADI certificate courses. During the rainy season, diving may not be at its best as storms reduce visibility.

Bali's great dive spots are around Nusa Lembongan, Sanur, Amed, Gili Tepekong, Menjangan Island and Tulamben. If you prefer not to get wet, why not take a submarine safari from around Candidasa or Nusa Lembongan.

Bali Activities

Bali Submarine Safaris: Amuk Bay and Nusa Lembongan

You can enter the fantastic underwater world without even getting wet with the novel submarine safaris. This submarine tours up to 150 feet below the surface at Amuk Bay near Candidasa so landlubbers can get a glimpse of the amazing undersea world.

The small submarine carries about 36 guests who have the opportunity to see and photograph the reef and marine creatures through the submarine's large port holes. Submarine safaris leave daily from Amuk Bay for 45 minutes of submerged pleasure.

Similar submarine tours are offered by cruise operators from pontoons off the coast of Nusa Lembongan, a favourite excursion island located southeast of the Bali mainland. The cabins are air-conditioned and soft-music plays to the scenes of vibrant underwater life.

Diving in Amed

This site is perfect for divers of all skill levels, from the novice to the experienced. Just two hours from Kuta-Legian on the eastern coastline, north of Padang Bai, Amed is famous as one of Bali's premier dive sites. Visibility is good ranging from 15-25 metres. Expect to see gorgonian fans, colourful soft corals plus rays, sharks and other big fish!

Diving in Gili Tepekong

Gili Tepekong is approximately an hour and a half by boat from Kuta-Legian's eastern coastline. The best dive sites are at a depth of 18 metres and above, due mainly to the unusually cold temperature. As the currents can get unpredictable and change often during a dive, this site is recommended for experienced divers only. There is a large variety of fish, silent reef sharks and an assortment of rays.

Diving in Sanur & Nusa Dua

Sanur and Nusa Dua's popular beach area also has the added bonus of an extensive barrier reef that stretches all along the beachfront. Diving is easy and relaxing with a depth range of between 6-40 feet revealing an exotic garden teeming with colorful fish against a backdrop of soft and hard corals.

Diving in Tulamben

Magnetic Tulamben offers a splendid wreck dive in the "Liberty" a US Cargo ship sunk during World War II. The "Liberty" lies submerged in a hundred feet of water, encrusted with anemone, gorgonian fans, coral sponges and other marine life. Tulamben is a favourite with marine biologists, underwater photographers and divers.

Menjangan Island National Park

Dive sites at Menjangan Island are actually part of a natural protected reserve. Situated in the northeastern tip of Bali, the Menjangan Island National Park offers a superb 130 feet drop-off and boasts elegant gorgonian sea fans, secret underwater cave passages, and the ultimate resting place of the "Angker" - a compelling wreck. Visibility up to 100 feet!

Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Penida Island

Dive locations around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are accessed from Sanur. The wide variety of dive sites include coral walls, drift dives in currents rating up to 4 plus knots. Notable dive sites here are Gamar Bay, Crystal Bay, Blue Corner, Toyapakeh, Cheningan Wall, Manta Point and Lembongan Bay.

Scuba Diving Tours in Bali

Dive Amed Tour

Amed is located on the north-east coast of Bali. By car, about 15 mins south of Tulamben, along the main road, and then 15 mins on a local road, so Amed is much prettier than Tulamben. It is also a sand beach as opposed to Tulamben's stony one. On the outskirts of Amed, you can see traditional salt-panning and buy sea salt as a souvenir of your visit!. Read More...

Dive Nusa Penida Tour

Nusa Penida is the largest of 3 islands (the others being Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan). The water here is fairly cold (because of the ocean currents) but often startlingly clear, with gorgeous corals and prolific fish, with some turtle, shark (including grey reefs and silver-tips) and - Aug-Sep - Mola-Mola (the weird and wonderful Sunfish).  Read More...

Dive Tulamben Tour

The Bay at Tulamben is home to schools of jack fish while the wall at the end of the bay plummets from the surface to 60 meters (200 feet) and is covered with soft coral trees, gorgonian fans and giant barrel sponges.  Read More...
